More detail on the workshops

Dr Andrew Challinor, University of Leeds
Growing crops in a changing climate

Dr ChallinorDr Challinor is an expert in the impact of climate change on crop yields in tropical areas. The talk will focus mainly on tropical crops, crop and climate prediction systems and how we can use them to equip ourselves for climate change.

It will include both some fundamental crop science to explain processes and a presentation of some relevant projects and their aims. While focussing on tropical crops, the work is relevant beyond the tropics as the methods used are similar in other parts of the globe.

Mags Shevlin, Leeds Urban Harvest
The Urban Harvest Project

Leeds Urban Harvest logoLeeds Urban Harvest was established in 2009 as a voluntary run project that picks unwanted fruit, gives the tree owners a share and distributes the rest to community groups in Leeds. Damaged fruits are turned into juice, preserves, jams and chutneys. Mags will talk about the history and aims of the project, and how people can get involved or set up their own project.

Helen Rimmer & Rachel Hubbard, Friends of the Earth
Fix the Food Chain: Campaigning to revolutionise meat and dairy farming

Fix the Food Chain LogoFew people realise that the meat and dairy industry causes more climate-changing emissions than every plane, train and car on the planet. But a hidden chain stretches from UK factory farms to the rainforests of South America – where huge soy plantations are wiping out wildlife and making climate change worse.

This workshop outlines how Friends of the Earth are calling on MPs to pass a new law to revolutionise the way meat and dairy are produced in the UK, and build alliances with farmers who we hope will support our campaign for more planet-friendly farming. Come along to find out more about the issue, progress so far, and how to take action to Fix the Food Chain. You can read more about the campaign here.

The Future of Food in Leeds

With the Leeds Food Strategy 2006 – 2010 being refreshed this year, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the achievements of the strategy and discuss where next for food in Leeds. We’ll also be hearing from Kari Walker, a member of Swillington Organic Farm’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) scheme. PSG logoLeeds Palestine Solidarity Group (PSG) and Leeds Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) are groups that advocate justice for the Palestinian people, through promoting human rights and highlighting the effects of Israeli Apartheid and the occupation of Palestine. This workshop will present and engage discussion on the detrimental effects of Israeli policies and practices (such as the false labelling of illegal settlement products) that threaten the food security and viability of the Palestinian people. The opportunities of the international Boycott Disinvestment and Sanctions movement as a strategy to counter such issues of injustice will be highlighted and discussed. We aim to increase local awareness and participation in this growing global initiative.

Jenny Cooke, Leeds SPEAK
Supermarket power and how to challenge it

Challenging supermarket power75% of UK groceries are sold through only 4 big-name supermarkets, which means suppliers have virtually no power to seek a fair price. This in turn gets passed onto the workers through insecure contracts, lack of access to protective clothing and low pay.

Jenny will discuss these issues and two opportunities to change policy – Traidcraft’s Responsible Purchasing Initiative, which specifically targets supermarket buyers and their supply chain, and the Government’s supermarkets commission which has recommended that an independent ombudsman is set up for suppliers to report supermarket abuses of power and investigate on their behalf.
